Daily Writing Prompt: The Power of Touch

Textures are everywhere: The rough edges of a stone wall. The smooth innocence of a baby’s cheek. The sense of touch brings back memories for us. What texture is particularly evocative to you?

Until now, I have honestly never thought about what textures remind me of certain things nor have I paid attention to what I tend to touch.

Upon thinking about it three textures stand out in my mind.

The first is the smooth feeling of marble, polished wood, stone, or any other building material. As I travel around to different places, I always feel the walls, the bar tops, chairs, tables, banister, etc. of historic buildings and landmarks. Now, any time I feel a smooth service that has obviously been made by a craftsman, I am transported to all the other amazing places I have been and seen in my life. Even now as I am working at my “desk”, (the kitchen island at my house), I am thinking about the Parthenon in Athens and all the Cathedrals I saw while in Europe.

The second is the texture and warmth of a loved ones hand. The warmth and love that I feel when a loved one grabs my hand is unreal. Sure there are other, more intimate touches that may come to mind when you think of showing love, but for me the simple grasp of a hand sets me at ease and makes me feel that all is right in my world. I almost feel like a safety blanket is wrapped around me.

The third is the feeling of a barbell in my hands. The cold steel, the knurling on the bar, and the sheer weight of the bar all signify, in my mind, that it is time to go to work. The problems of my day seem to melt away and I am left with a nervous, competitive feeling. Am I going to be beat by the weight today?
